Dr. Comfort sought a solution to reduce the errors and lead time associated with creating custom orthotics in a doctor’s office. Executing its data acquisition and machine-to-machine communication knowledge, Optimal Design presented a concept which would prove to be a paradigm shift for the industry. The device is designed to perform two separate scans to capture the top and bottom contours of the foot, using 3D imagery. Data is then captured and transferred via Bluetooth to a laptop, where a point cloud is generated, smoothed, and sent via Wi-Fi to CNC equipment where a custom orthopedic insert is machined and manufactured. Through the innovation of Optimal Design, the Dr. Comfort was heavily improved, generating a positive impact for not only the doctors using it, but also the patients.
